Rallies !

Democrats and Republicans alike need to hear from us before this parade of greed and hate is confirmed to a Cabinet that will attack working people, civil liberties, and the environment, while benefiting fellow billionaires and corporations.

That’s why on Tuesday, Jan 24, Daily Kos is teaming up with MoveOn.org members and other allies across the country to rally outside Democratic and Republican senators’ in-district offices with a clear message: “Stop the #SwampCabinet.”

During the rallies, we will tell our senators and the media why Trump’s cabinet is not what America wants or needs. We will demand that senators use their power to block and resist Trump’s cabinet of hate, greed and corruption.

With just 48 votes in the Senate, Democrats do not have the votes to stop any of Trump’s nominees without GOP defections. They can, however, slow the work of the Senate. The longer Democrats can delay Trump’s nominations and legislative agenda, the more time we have to organize resistance and move public opinion. Over the long run, delaying becomes blocking.

Republicans, for their part, claim to be “draining the swamp” and chasing corruption out of Washington. But, so far, Trump has nominated a cabal of corruption that will continue to foster the same cronyism and misconduct Republicans claim to be cleaning up.

Here are a few of Trump’s cabinet nominees:
Jeff Sessions, nominee for attorney general, enemy of civil rights and women’s rights. Was deemed too racist to confirm to a federal judgeship by fellow Republicans in 1986. Would be responsible for enforcing the country’s civil rights laws.
Steve Mnuchin, the nominee for treasury secretary, former Goldman Sachs executive who got rich at the expense of working Americans. He ran a bank called a “foreclosure machine” that kicked people out of their houses, using techniques so coldblooded a federal judge called them “harsh, repugnant, shocking and repulsive.”
Scott Pruitt, nominee for Environmental Protection Agency administrator, climate science denier. As Oklahoma Attorney General, he has repeatedly sued the EPA to attack the Clean Power Plan and Clean Water Rule, even passing off as his own a letter criticizing the EPA written and delivered to him by a big oil company’s top lobbyist.
The Senate will be narrowly divided 52-48 between Republicans and Democrats in 2017 and many key Senate committees hold a slim partisan split. If Democrats stick together, it could only take one or two principled Republican votes to block many of Trump’s nominees.

Progressive activism is building pressure. A little more than a week ago, Colorado Congressman Mike Coffman fled a listening session after being confronted by constituents demanding to know why he supported taking away their healthcare. We must keep holding our elected officials accountable and we can do that by showing up in numbers at their offices, earning local media, and making sure our voices are heard.

There’s no time to waste. Will you join your neighbors and attend the nearest office visit this Tuesday, January 24?
