The Word of the Year

According to the Oxford Dictionaries, the word of the year is “post-truth.” The dictionary’s new Word of the Year is defined as “circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief.”

I was thinking the word of the year was “misogynist”.  For those who might be unclear of the definition of misogynist it is defined as “a person who hates, dislikes, mistrusts, or mistreats women.”

I am not sure how those at the Oxford group determine the “word of the year”, but if through cloud sources, I would love to see this broken out by gender !

The Safety Pin Movement

And yet something else to disagree about.  I like the safety pin movement.  I believe it stands for exactly what is posted above.  You are safe with me – I will not abuse you, make fun of you, or denigrate you because of who you are, what you look like or what/who you believe in.  I will stand beside you – if others should speak out against you for these very reasons.  I will speak up for you.

I know others, find this to be trite.  They blame the elections results on “White People” and therefore – no white person should be allowed to say they disagree with the results?  That’s absurd.  They believe the safety pin movement is nothing and means nothing.

I disagree.  Millions of people wear red ribbons – does that mean that each person is attempting for find a cure for HIV?  NO !  Millions of people wear pink ribbons – are they attempting to find a cure for Breast Cancer?  NO!  They wear those ribbons to let the world know, and those who are diagnosed know that they support those who suffer and that they want a cure found.  Many donate money or time to raise money – hoping that the money will lead to cures.

Is the safety pin any different?  While there are not yet fund-raising aspects – I expect at some point there will be – the support is the same.

But we are each entitle to our own opinions – this is mine.

My Fellow Americans

Dear Fellow Americans

The pollsters said you wanted change. This is not change. This is yet another misogynistic man, who denigrates and subjugates women. A man who does not honor his commitments, cheats those with whom he signs contracts, cheats on his wives, uses foul language and expresses even fouler thoughts and is simply a bully.

This morning, as I walked down the streets of New York, I looked at those I passed. I really looked at them, in the face. (Normally, we New Yorkers do not do that. We know you are there – but do not have the time or inclination to acknowledge you.) But today I looked. And these thoughts went through my mind: Woman in the high powered suit – did you vote for him? Man in the jeans and sweater – did you vote for him? Three young men in their suits laughing with their Starbucks in hand – did you? Two young women jogging passed – what about you?

And then, I saw you. Are you a kindred spirit? A tall woman wearing sweatpants and a t-shirt. The t-shirt said: TUBMAN. I saw the look on your face as you approached me. You looked sad and yet determined. Had you also realized that glass ceiling is much thicker than we ever imagined? I caught your eye and looked down at TUBMAN and then back at your face. Were those tears in your eyes, there were a few in mine. You nodded at me, I nodded at you. We both stood a bit taller and walked past each other.

We will weather this storm as we have the others. We are New Yorkers, we are Americans and we are
Women. Someday, it will be our day. Some day we will blow that glass ceiling away. And then we will have true change. A compassionate and intelligent leader. One who is truly inclusive.

G-d Bless America.
